EXPERTISE

News Media and Communications Management

  • Masters degree in English plus 21 additional credits in administration and supervision and certification in Journalism with over 15 years experience in all aspects of communications, public information and special events management.


  • Reporting to Superintendent of Schools and representing Superintendent and District (30,000 employees and 230,000 students) as communications liaison at public meetings and events, including government, corporate, university and community groups at local, state, national and international level.
       
    • Directing proactive, successful news media and public relations divisions, including board relations, marketing, special events, volunteers and visitor information, for the fourth and fifth-largest public school districts in the United States, resulting in positive local, statewide, national and international recognition and funding, especially for new initiatives.
       
    • Advising chief executives, senior staff and board members using managerial and communications expertise regarding media and public relations, especially during crises. 

      

    • Serving as district spokesperson to news media and the public, including for potential media crises, as well as presenting hundreds of speeches at local, state and national level.
       
    • Developing from conception to implementation comprehensive public information and communications strategies, sensitive to brand recognition, to increase public awareness and support for programs, events, accomplishments, services and new initiatives for organizations with $20 million to $2 billion budgets.
       
    • Writing speeches and talking points for Superintendents and board members; arranging media interviews.
       
    • Leading award-winning media and public relations staffs from 13 to 98 people; supervising development and delivery of various communications media including news releases, board meeting newsletters, annual reports, specialty publications, videos, press conferences, interviews and personal contact.
       
    • Answering day-to-day inquiries from local, state, national and international media and general public as well as government, corporate, university and community leaders while proactively building positive relations with reporters and editors.
       
    • Possessing excellent oral and written communication skills as well as superior interpersonal skills with diverse communities, including board members, senior staff, volunteers and union, government, university, corporate, foundation and community leaders.
       
    • Managing and monitoring up to $10 million operating budget.
       
    • Working effectively in multiple teams as well as independently and proactively, handling multiple, concurrent assignments.
       
    • Serving as president, Society of Professional Journalists, Sigma Delta Chi, Greater Miami Chapter.


    Special Events Management

    • Supervising community relations division, including cultivating and managing more than 20,000 volunteers.
       
    • Developing strategic marketing and public relations campaigns, sensitive to brand recognition, including special events and conferences, for internal and external audiences--always on time and under budget-resulting in financial support for new initiatives.

       

    • Raising over $10 million for public education initiatives through public and private partnerships.

       

    • Chairing numerous non-profit special events, including first charity ball for non-profit organization's 50th anniversary, raising over $125,000.

       

    • Chairing more than 100 national, regional, statewide and local one to three-day conferences and special events for up to 2,500 attendees. Responsibilities include: managing and supervising committees; logistics; negotiating venue, food, accommodations, equipment, speaker/entertainment and vendor contracts; securing speakers and vendors; program design and content; printed materials; marketing and public relations; registration and speakers' remarks.

       

    • Developing from conception to implementation strategic reorganization initiatives for organizations with budgets ranging in size from $20 million to $2 billion.

     

    • Curating six solo photography exhibitions, for shows including up to 34 images. Responsibilities include: securing the venue, marketing; hanging show; organizing opening reception, securing sponsors; designing and printing the invitation and other collateral materials; wall tags; printing, matting and packaging of smaller prints in various sizes from 8X10 to16X20; creating photography greeting card gift packages; and designing and printing the exhibition book.
